Funeral Services for Mary P. Martin will be held Friday, September 27, 2019, 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church. Interment will be Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Holy Family Cemetery and Mausoleum in New Iberia, LA. Family hour is scheduled from 6pm to 7pm Thursday at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church. Open Visitation will be 12pm Saturday at St. John Baptist Church, Jeanerette, LA.

Mrs. Martin was a native of New Iberia, LA and a resident of Shreveport, LA. She was a member of Mt. Canaan Baptist Church for over sixty years. She served as a member of the choir, deaconess, a Sunday School teacher and Youth Director. She was a member of the 13th District Missionary Baptist Association for sixty-seven years and served as Chairperson for thirteen years. She served as Director of Women’s Auxiliary for the 13th District from 2011- 2018.

Mary graduated from Iberia Training School in 1947. She attended Southern University and obtained her B.S. degree. She later earned a Master’s degree from Prairie View A&M College +30. Further studies were done at Northwestern University in LA and special studies in Quebec, Canada. She served the children in the Caddo Parish School district for thirty-seven years. She taught second grade at Walnut Hill, Hollywood and University Elementary schools. She served as a French Specialist and Counselor at South Highland Elementary. She was a Soror of Sigma Gamma Rho and Phi Delta Kappa.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Josephine Provost; father, George Provost and beloved husband, Albert F. Martin, III; sisters, Lavera Provost Stutts and Mercedes Provost Anderson; brothers, Addison David Provost and Harold James Provost, Sr.; grandchildren, Christian James Howard and Sondra Lavera Brown; sons in love, Johnny Ray Howard, Sr. and Willie Hugh Taylor. She leaves to cherish her memory, three children, Sondra Martin Howard Taylor, Pastor Albert Franklin Martin IV (Betty) and Ivy Jill Martin Jacobs (Mark); sisters, Lillian Provost Harris and Beulah Pearl Provost; brother, George Henry Provost; six grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, one great great-granddaughter and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
