Obituary for Tommie Warren Jr.
Tommie Warren Jr., was born on October 23, 1952 to the union of the late Tommie Warren, Sr.
and Herreice Black Warren in Shreveport, LA. He was the fourth of ten children and the third
oldest of six boys. Tommie accepted Christ at a young age, being baptized by Rev. Woodson at
Morning Star Baptist Church in 1964, and then united with Midway Missionary Baptist Church
#2 under the leadership of Rev. M.B. Bass in 1965 along with his siblings, Charles, Howard and
sister Paulette.
Tommie graduated from Bethune Junior & Senior High School in 1970. He received his formal
education at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA., and earned his bachelors degree in
Education in 1974. While at Southern, he worked on the college yearbook staff and designed
several covers of the universitys yearbooks, including the cover honoring the slaying of two
fellow students, (Smith and Brown) killed in a riot on the campus. He also pledged Phi Beta
Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Rho Chapter, serving as Dean of Pledgees and President. He remained an
active member of Phi Beta Sigma, with Alpha Xi Sigma Chapter in Shreveport until his death.
Upon graduation, Tommie began his teaching career at North Caddo High School in Vivian,
Louisiana, teaching art. He attended graduate school in the evenings driving, to Louisiana Tech
University, and earned his masters degree in education. Later he was promoted to Assistant
Principal at North Caddo High School. After retiring from the Caddo Parish School system, he
both taught and served as Assistant Principal at Karnack High School in East Texas. Because of
his love for art, he and several of his friends opened an art studio "Pamoja Art Society" near
downtown Shreveport, where they showcased their artwork and taught others art and how to
perfect their skills. Along with his artistic abilities, Tommie was an avid photographer.
Tommies love for family, church and friends, and his passion for helping others exemplified the
name he was given while pledging Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, "Mr. Polite".
Tommie was a faithful member of Midway Missionary Baptist Church #2 and dedicated his time
and talents serving as a member of the Deacon Board, Superintendent and teacher of the Sunday
school, and as a member of the Christian Board of Education. As a missionary, he provided
meals to the elderly members of the church and the community and visited with the sick and
shut-in. For his contributions to the church and the community, he was recognized as "Father of
the Year". Tommie was an active member of Midway Baptist Church until receiving the call
from his Lord and Savior, January 8, 2020.
